Easy Ways to Cut Expenses
Try these easy ways to cut expenses and save money.
Save at Work:
- Buy a thermos and bring your own coffee to work. A regular cup of coffee can cost $2 or more in some areas. At $2 a day, you're
spending $500 a year.
- Bring your breakfast and/or lunch to work rather than eating at a restaurant or in your company's cafeteria. You could save
anywhere from $5 to $10 or more a day - which adds up to hundreds or even thousands over a year.
At the Store:
- Make shopping lists and stick to them. Buy only what you need.
- Compare prices at three stores before making a major purchase. Buy used or second-hand items when practical.
- New cars lose as much as one third of their value in the first year. If you must buy a car, consider a used one.
At Home:
- Check bills for errors.
- Don't throw things away until they wear out.
- Do things yourself that you used to pay for, such as ironing your shirts or mowing your lawn.
- Save energy and money on your electric bill by turning the lights off when you leave a room; switching to energy-efficient
light bulbs; and washing clothes in cold water.
Everywhere:
- If you smoke, think about giving it up. Besides the health benefits, you could save more than $2,700 per year by quitting a
pack-a-day habit.
